As mentioned in our newsletter, we are in the middle of Ramadan and its a tradition to make food and then give to your neighbors. In return, the neighbor makes something and sends the plate back full of new food. Well, we have only lived in our new home for a few weeks and already our neighbors are sharing this tradition with us.
Here's our story: 2 days ago (Saturday), our doorbell rang and Randall answered it and to his surprise there were 3 little kids standing outside our door with a plate covered with foil. Randall seemed excited to try a new Arabic dish and to Liz's surprise, it was a food she had been served at a recent wedding (a mushy chicken and dumplings kindof dish that the people eat with their hands). Needless to say, Liz wasn't too excited but Randall dove right in (after putting Toni's seasoning on it) and tried it. Moving on, Liz decided to make an American dish: Chocolate Brownies to send back on the neighbor's plate.
Tonight (Monday) around 6:30 (which is when they break fast), Liz and Morgan took the plate of brownies to the neighbors and talked with the Mother, explaining what the brownies were. Not 10 minutes later after returning home did our doorbell ring. Once again Randall opened it to the same 3 kids who were standing there with a plate of food. This time a new mushy dish with an interesting smell. HaHa We thought! They must have liked the brownies! Then 5 minutes later the doorbell rang again and the same 3 kids stood there with a second plate of rice mix and Arabic salad (which we like). I guess they really liked the brownies! The question is: what should Liz make next to send back???

I think Liz should make another plate of brownies since they went over so good. Who know's what you will recieve!
Hi guys! That's so neat about the food exchange! I love hearing about the different traditions you guys are becoming a part of. It seems like they like a sweet treat, so maybe some chocolate chip cookies or a different kind of cookie. Have fun!

I love the Arabic salad. Yummy. But the whole eating with the hands thing still bothers me. Especially from the shared platter.
This was so hilarious! You had all of us crackin up! The rice dish looked good, but I'm not so sure about the mystery food. Maybe you should send back some puppy chow (chex mix w/ the powdered sugar). That was a great treat, just don't call it "puppy chow" haha. Love you all...............mom
